Why It’s Great to Teach Abroad

Tara Recruitment is delighted to have partnered with an expert in overseas teaching recruitment. This former head teacher has supported hundreds of individuals to make the move. Together, we are keen to help you find the ideal match with roles in schools across the globe. In this article, we explore some of the reasons why it’s great to teach abroad.

Are you Keen to Teach Abroad?

In our previous article, we encouraged schools to consider international workers to fill vacancies. Many qualified teachers are keen to come to England to build experience and they have the skills and experience that schools are looking for. However, in this article, we turn things around. Are you a qualified teacher who is keen to teach abroad?

There are many reasons to expand your horizons and apply your expertise in another country. Here are three to get you thinking:

Earn & Explore While Teaching Abroad

Firstly, it is a great way to fund travel to destinations across the globe. Have you always wanted to visit other countries? If you’ve been put off by the risk of taking time off work or cost, this is a fantastic opportunity to earn and explore. What’s more, you’ll gain an immersive experience of a different culture, living the life, rather than simply visiting the tourist spots.

Continuous Learning

English is the global business language. Therefore, it is an essential skill for students to learn in schools across the world. So, you can help develop their confidence in speaking, listening and reading English, while you learn the language of the country you work in. That sounds like a good exchange!

Extend your Life Experience

Teaching abroad offers fresh insights into other cultures and curriculums. It will challenge and reward you in ways that staying in the UK cannot. You’ll gather great life experiences, new friends and stories to share. It can be a valuable way to build your CV, which can open up future career opportunities.

What Can Qualified Teachers Expect in Terms of Salary & Benefits?

We understand that relocating to another country is a risk and an upheaval. For this reason, you need to understand the salary and benefits offered to qualified teachers.

The salary will depend on where you decide to relocate to, the type of school and your experience. If you secure a role in an International school in the Middle East, you could earn considerably more than working in a public school in South East Asia. However, the wage will always be competitive and sufficient to cover living costs. It is also paid during school holidays.

In addition, qualified teachers placed by our expert in overseas teaching will receive:

  • Fully furnished accommodation or a housing allowance
  • Financial support with relocation costs
  • Comprehensive medical cover
  • Annual flights
  • School fees subsidy for children

What Do You Need to Teach in an International School?

The job specification for most teaching roles in international schools requires applicants to:

  • Be a native English speaker
  • Be a qualified PGCE teacher
  • Hold a University degree in the subject specialism
  • Have several years of classroom experience

In addition, you may have additional language skills, subject expertise or life experience that can boost your CV. What’s more, you will need to fulfil the requirements to obtain a work visa. This is one of the many steps that we can support you with.

If you tick all the boxes and feel inspired to teach abroad, why not register your interest as a candidate? We’ll be in touch and you can ask our international education consultant any questions you may have about working overseas. We’d love to help you make the move.

Can You Teach Abroad if You Are Not a Teacher?

As a final point, if you have a degree and are a native English speaker, it is possible to study for a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification. This isn’t as demanding as a PGCE, but you do need to pay for the training, commit to studying online or at college and complete live practice teaching experience.

TEFL is a globally recognised qualification, which typically gives access to shorter-term teaching placements. Some opportunities are volunteering, with accommodation provided. Others are paid positions. They can be a great option for a gap year or career break if you want to explore the world and try something new. Find out more on the TEFL website.
